There will be lots of cowboy boots, hats, spurs, hundreds of cowboys and cowgirls, horses, bulls and plenty of family fun thundering into Galena for the annual Star Spangled Shenandoah Pro Rodeo. The rodeo consists of two performances of exciting action on July 2 and 3 at the Shenandoah Riding Center, 200 N. Brodrecht Rd., Galena, at 7:30 p.m. both evenings. The Big Hat World Championship Rodeo Company will be providing non-stop thrills, spills, laughter and family fun!
Spectators will see talented contestants from throughout the United States and Canada, including current and former world champions and today’s hottest contenders, competing for thousands of dollars in prize money as well as championship points and awards. Hilarious, family-friendly rodeo clowns, specialty acts, and outstanding bucking livestock are all part of the program. In addition, there will be pony rides, novelties, concessions and a family games area as part of the weekend festivities. Returning by popular demand is the free “Cowboys & Clowns” program, open to families from 4-5 p.m. each day. Children, accompanied by an adult, will be able to meet the animal stars of the rodeo in an up-close and personal tour of the livestock area.
The rodeo features six competitive events: bareback riding, tie down roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, cowgirls’ barrel racing and, everybody’s favorite event, bull riding. The Friday performance will benefit the rodeo’s breast cancer awareness, research and treatment fund, “Tough Enough to Wear Pink.” This program was founded several years ago after the sport of rodeo lost world champions and beloved contestants to breast cancer. So far, nearly $15 million dollars have been donated to Susan G. Komen and Deanna Favre Hope Foundations, as well as other breast cancer organizations.
General hillside seating, along with bleacher seating, will be available and visitors are encouraged to start arriving early with blankets and chairs to get a good seat. The spectacular fireworks display, provided by J&M; Displays, will start immediately following both rodeo performances.
